AMERICANISM

Americanism

The Jack London Supreme Council ROTC award for Colleges and Universities and the JROTC award for High Schools recognize outstanding cadets. The cadet must: contribute the most among cadets to encourage and demonstrate Americanism by deeds or conduct during participation in extracurricular activities or community projects; demonstrate academic excellence by being in the top 25% of the academic class; demonstate outstanding leadership by exhibiting qualities of dependability, good character, self discipline, good citizenship, and patriotism; not previously received this award. These awards are approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense and consists of a medal, ribbon and certificate.

Each year, the Valley of Spokane sends representatives to Colleges, Universities and High Schools to present these awards at recognition ceremonies and banquets. Additionally, we host the JROTC cadets and their families during the month of May to provide an opportunity for them to perform drill demonstrations, meet our members and for the cadet and their family to enjoy fellowship and be recognized.

Shoes AND SOCKS for kids

This community service program is supported by the Scottish Rite Charities Philanthropy and has been serving children in our community for 26 years.

When Clarence Sportsman passed away his money was placed in a trust fund, which he willed to the Spokane Scottish Rite.  It was his desire that the interest from the trust fund be used for the purchase of shoes (and clothing) for needy children.  Clarence was very firm in his belief that, “No child should have to attend school with holes in his shoes.” Since 1999 our Valley has distributed $170,000.00 worth of shoes and socks. Shoes and socks are given to school staff members who can best ensure discrete distribution directly to the children. In 2024, thirty three schools in our local area received 1,584 pairs of shoes and 3,168 socks for the kids.

knowledge and leadership

Our Valley offers opportunities to gain knowledge on our crafts history, degrees and what it really means to be a Scottish Rite Mason in the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction. Our members offer their perspectives on valley actives and programs; degrees; alegories and other topics of interest (piracy and masonry was an exceptional one) during stated meetings or in a more informal setting on the patio while enjoying refreshments and cigars.

Once per year, the Lodge of Perfections hosts an informal session on the patio with our newest members in a non-attribution setting to solicit their input on the degrees they experienced and their perspective on Valley activiites and Programs as a means to ensure we are meeting the needs of our members; and to solicit from each member, what they can contribute, participate in and/or new activities they would find desireable.

Formal leadership development opportunities are two fold and are partially funded by Scottish Rite Charties Education funds.

First, our Valley selects at one candidate to participate in formal leadership seminars and training hosted by the Supreme Council at varous locations throughout the country. We select the candidate based on his leadership potential and his demonstrated willingness to be involved on an ongoing basis.

Secondly, our Valley selects at one candidate to nominate for the Supreme Counicls Sovergn Grand Commanders (SGC) Fellowship program. If accepted the Fellow is hosted at the House of the Temple in Washington DC by the SGC and enjoys round table discussions with the SGC, plenary sessions with distinguished guest speakers from the Rites, Shrine, Grand Lodges and others. Lastly, the Fellow will experience the rich history of the House of the Temple and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Old Town Alexandria Virgninia.

Additional leadership opportunities come in many forms. From taking an actiive leadership role in our meetings, events and charities. Or being elected or appointed to one of the many officer positions available in the four primary bodies or Knights of St. Andrew.

scottish rite funeral service

The Rose Croix Funeral is a public service made available at the request of the decedent or his survivors for the funeral of a Scottish Rite Mason of any degree. Generally, it is in lieu of the Masonic Service, not supplimentary.

Our Valley conducts this Service with a team of four Scottish Rite Masons. The Wise Master, Senior Warden, Junior Warden and Orator. The ritual is delivered with great skill, solemnity and emotion and is our way of honoring the life of a departed brother.

In many cases this Service is the first exposure the decedents family and friends have to Scottish Rite Masonry or Masonry in general.

Our active Rose Croix Funeral team consists of Chris Wirts 32 KCCH (point of contact for arranging services), Merl Iverson 33 IGH, Kurt Kimberling 33 IGH, Ryan Leonard 33 IGH, Roger Nelson 33 IGH, Winfield Cline 32 KCCH, Lucas Wash 32 KCCH.
